Aqiqah is an important ritual done within Islam for the newborns which includes sacrificing an animal in thanks to Allah. In Islam, it is considered recommended Sunnah, near to necessary believing it protects the child as well a source of blessing for him or her. The Muslims commemorate this day with a special aqiqah ceremony where they sacrifice animal and share the meat with the relatives, friends, and specially to needy people as charity.
What Is Aqiqah in Islam?
In Islam, it is an act of gratitude and devotion made by parents to their child. It demonstrates the recognition of Allah’s gift of a child and praying for His blessings and protection for the child. This custom also strengthens the Islamic values regarding social welfare and philanthropy because some of the meat from the sacrifice is distributed to those who are needy and also share happiness with relatives and friends.
Aqeekah for Boys and Girls:
Islam has given different guidelines for aqiqah for boys and girls. According to Islamic tradition:
- For a baby boy, two sheep or goats are sacrificed.
- For a baby girl, one sheep or goat is sacrificed.
Both boys and girls are equally cherished in Islam, and the difference in the number of animals is not a measure of value but rather a practice based in Sunnah.
The Ceremony:
The Aqiqah for the kid by sacrificial animal offering is celebrated after 7 days post the child’s birth, but can be done later if life complications arise. The ceremony includes:
Animal Sacrifice: Fulfilling the Islamic guidelines, the animal is sacrificed after the said ceremony, ensuring the animal is in good health and treated kindly.
Shaving Baby’s Head: The hair of the newborn is shaved as a sign of cleansing, and the hair is weighed and the equal price of silver is donated.
Naming the Child: Other families prefer to celebrate this special occasion for announcing the baby’s name too. Commonly used names for Muslim baby boys are Muhammad, Ali, Hassan, Hamza. Babies’ girl names include Fatima, Zainab, Maryam, Aisha which are also popular Muslims names.
Dua and Blessing: The baby is prayed upon for their well being in future and good life.
Charity and Distribution: A sacrifice is used to bring the meat to those in need. Reinforcing the values of generosity and community support.
Aqiqah and Charity:
Instead of personally carrying out the sacrifice, a lot of people prefer donation where they organize the gathering and donate the sacrificed animal or its meat to a charity. This ensures that the act of devotion reaches underprivileged families. In certain areas, some organizations provide Aqiqah donation services which allow Muslims to donate while observing this Sunnah.
Dua (It’s Prayer):
There is a significant dua recitation performed during the sacrifice which praises and requests the children Allah’s blessings and protection. The prayer appreciates and asks for the Almighty’s help throughout the child’s life. Parents must possess a good understanding of Quranic teachings in order to properly advise their children. Our sessions provide a comprehensive learning experience, empowering you to understand and recite these essential Duas and teach them to your family for becoming a better muslim.
Importance in Islam:
It holds deep spiritual significance as it shows the attitude of being grateful to Allah. It shows the expression of gratitude that one should always remember Allah in every kind of time. Muslims believe that this act will help protecting the child from harm, and instilling the values of charity and community in families. The practice also reflects the prophetic tradition, a beautiful sunnah as Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also performed aqiqah for his grandsons, Hassan and Hussain.
Conclusion:
