“Bunyan-un Marsoos” – A Quranic Verse, A Military Operation, and A Message of Unity

There are instances when the entire nation, and not just individuals, can receive motivation, discipline, as well as unity from a single verse of the Qur’an . A beautiful example is found in Surah As-Saff (Chapter 61), Ayah 4. In this verse, Allah expresses how He loves those who stand as one and fight in His way:
The Verse:

“Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in rows as if they are a solid structure.” (Qur’an, 61:4)

Arabic: إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ صَفًّا كَأَنَّهُم بُنْيَانٌ مَّرْصُوصٌ

What Does Bunyan Marsus Mean?

In simple words, this ayah (verse) is talking about the importance of discipline, teamwork, and unity. Allah says that He loves those who stand and strive in His path like a solid wall, strong, structured, and unshakable.

It’s not just about going to battle. It’s about standing together in anything that is for the sake of good and just, as they say that biggest jihad is the battle within. Be it helping others, standing against oppression, or building a better society. So, the key message is

“Believers should be strong and connected like bricks in a wall, connected, supportive, and unbreakable together.”

Operation Bunyan-e-Marsus – Pakistan, May 2025

The Pakistan Armed Forces launched an operation against India in May of 2025, and this verse became particularly relevant. The operation was set during a period of serious escalation and active hostilities on the border.  

What Was the Reason for The Name?  

It was not a random choice. It represented precisely what the verse indicates:  

Soldiers united together forming a bulwark.  

A wall unyielding.  

Discipline in the face of an attack.  

A defensive alliance.  

Standing together, collectively.  

A strong statement, not only for the enemy, but also for the country, and for the entire globe.  

Pakistan believes, stands, and remains determined, just as `Surah As-Saff’ mentions, “the believers whom Allah loves.”

What We May Take Away 

The significance of this verse is not tied only to the battleground.

The name or Ayat preferably serves Muslims in every aspect, even outside the context of war:

When we extend a helping hand towards one another in our communities.

When we lend support towards one another in our families.

When we act with purpose and unity in our faith. 

No matter if one is a soldier, a student, a parent, or a leader, the case is the same: 

Maintain your position. Maintain your position with others. And maintain your position with the truth.

Final Remarks:

In the year 2025, Operation Bunyan-e-Marsus serves as an example of a military action that borders on exercising a living divine command. A living reminder when we come together with absolute ikhlas and adab, we exhibit a might beyond us.

Thus, the next suppliant reads ayah As-Saff or hears ‘Bunyanun Marsus’ go off in their heads, they ought to remember:

It is not a mere reference to soldiers and battlefields.

It encompasses the notion of one’s self, one’s team, one’s action as collective harmony worthy of Allah’s admiration.
