How to Perform Wudu (Ablution)
Cleanliness is regarded or emphasized in Islam in such a way that it is described as an integral part of faith or half faith. As Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) states: “Purity is half of one’s faith” (Sahih Muslim). This hadith brings light to the relevance hygiene has on one’s life in a physical and spiritual way. Islam does not merely promote cleanliness rather, it uses it in daily practices making it a requirement towards worship. All major practices have a prerequisite of cleanliness, with some requiring essential wudu (ablution) such as salah (prayers/namaz).
Islam advocates for both physical and spiritual cleanliness. A person is required to uphold cleanliness in their clothes, environment, but most importantly, their heart and mind. The Holy Quran cannot be touched without someone being in a state of purification (tahara), while some insist that one must be in a state of Ablution (wudu). This justifies the Islamic view of considering hygiene a matter of respect for divine revelation.
The importance of wudu in terms of purification is paramount in Islam. This ritual washing of the face is nothing more than completing tasks aligning with the paradigm shift of salah (prayer) in order to get oneself ready for salah, representing the cleansing rituals prior to facing Allah. No ablution means no proper prayer, highlighting the importance of worship in Islam. Quran proclaims:
“O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles…” (Surah Al- Ma’idah 5:6)
Performing ablution does not simply issem off the marks of sin on the body but wipes the sins off the soul as well and makes the Muslim ready to now connect with Allah and speak to him. This entails that the person has to wash some designated parts of the body in a particular manner which cultivates orderly behavior alongside devotion.
