Islam and Muslim- Are they Same?

Many people who unknown to Islam, especially those unfamiliar with Islamic terminologies often ask: are Islam and Muslim the same? Or, Is Muslim and Islam the same thing? What is the difference? To understand this simply, While these two words are closely related, they do not mean the same though. Understanding the difference is important to use them correctly and respectfully for effective communication and making an argument while discussing related matters.

What is Islam?

Islam is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion which means that its followers believe in one God (Allah in Arabic). The term refers to surrender or submission to the will of God. It does not only pertain as set of beliefs but also a complete way of life encompassing spiritual, moral, social, legal and economic principles, just like Christianity, Judaism or Hinduism for a practical life implementation over the mentioned matters. A complete independent theology although Islam has many similarities with Christianity & Judaism because these are also Abrahamic religions.

Islam’s basic teachings peace, justice, compassion along with the accountability in the Hereafter and was taught by the last prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who received revelations from Allah that are compiled in Quran the holy book.

So when someone says Islam, they refer to the religion itself with its beliefs practices laws and principles and not the person.

Who is a Muslim?

The followers or people who follow and practice Islam are known as Muslims. The word comes from the concept of its religion and literally means “one who submits (to God).” Any person who believes in the oneness of God, the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH), and follows the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah (the practices of the Prophet). He should also acknowledge that Holy Prophet is the last messenger or Prophet. Just like a person who follows Christianity is called a Christian, or one who follows Buddhism is a Buddhist, a Muslim is someone who practices teachings of Islam.

Key Difference Between the terms

To make it very simple Islam is the religion while Muslims are the follower of the religion.

This means that religion is what is believed, and follower is who believes it.

Common Misunderstandings

Because the words often sound similar, it’s easy to mix them up. Some people mistakenly say that “I believe in Muslim” instead of “I believe in Islam,” or say “Muslim is a peaceful religion,” which is not grammatically correct, the correct phrase would be “Islam is a peaceful religion.” Another confusion is referring to the Muslim community as “the Islam people.” The accurate term would be “Muslims” or “the Muslim community.” Or “Islamic people.

Why It Matters to understand?

The world is full of countless cultures and languages with norms exactly having opposite values in in two different cultures so using these terms correctly is important for mutual respect and interfaith understanding as well as effective communication. Just like it’s respectful to call people by their proper names, it’s also respectful to refer to their religion and identity properly. Misusing terms can lead to confusion or even offense, even if it’s unintentional which might hurt sentiments and even cause a fight or dispute without any good.
